In Memoriam

George Dutilh Smith, 81, Chapel Hill, N.C., died Sept. 14, 2002.  He flew 33 missions with the 39th Squadron as a radio operator.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, and the Asiatic-Pacific and American Defense service medals.  After World War II, he worked as a commercial real estate broker in New York City and retired in 1975.  His wife of 56 years, Mariechen Smith, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren survive him.  "George did not talk much about the war except when he was with his crew," Mariechen Smith said.   [6BG Newsletter, Jan 2003, p. 7]
