The Tail Gunner was responsible for keeping enemy planes away from the tail of the aircraft - which was particularly vulnerable to enemy attack. It was a lonely job, since he was isolated from the rest of the crew in his own pressurized compartment. On the other hand, he had a good view of the action, especially on low-level bombing missions. The Tail Gunner was also an Armorer [MOS 612] and an Airplane Mechanic [MOS 748] or an Aviation Engineer [MOS 737].
